Health and Social Care Minister Claire Christian has outlined the budget for Manx Care in 2026-27, telling Tynwald the funding represents a “clear and continued commitment” to the island’s health service.
Speaking during the Budget debate, Ms Christian said the 12% increase on the previous funding baseline would support additional GP appointments, increased respite for carers and expanded children’s disability services.
“This budget is here to protect our core NHS services,” she told members.
“Every pound in this budget has a purpose, and that purpose is the patients, service users and carers who trust that the services that they need, care about or rely on will be there when they need them.”
Mandate
The minister acknowledged the financial challenges facing the system, which has seen its mandate rise from £289 million in 2022-23. She pointed to inflationary pressures, pay settlements and rising costs of medical consumables and drugs.
“Like every health service across the British Isles, we face rising demands, rising complexity and rising costs,” Ms Christian said. “The scale is different, but the challenges are the same.”
The mandate includes funding for 10,000 extra GP appointments, respite support for an additional 100 carers, and an expansion of children’s disability outreach services from 25 to 88 families.
A cost improvement programme targeting £6 million in efficiencies has been set, alongside a wider financial recovery programme aiming to deliver £30 million in recurring savings over three years.
