Manx athletes have begun their Commonwealth Games campaign in Glasgow, as the Education Minister uses the opening days to deepen political and diplomatic ties.
The team of 27 appeared alongside 73 nations at the OVO Hydro on Thursday, led by 17‑year‑old Alfie Bezance, the island’s youngest ever flag bearer.
Education, Sport and Culture Minister Daphne Caine MHK attended the ceremony with representatives of the Isle of Man Commonwealth Games Association. She said the athletes had “worked exceptionally hard to reach this level” and that the island would be behind them throughout the ten day event.
Political Ties
During her visit, Minister Caine met new UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham MP, who highlighted the close relationship between the Isle of Man and the UK — particularly longstanding links with the North West of England.
She also spoke with His Majesty The King, thanking him for last week’s first visit to the Island as Lord of Mann, and met His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh.
Minister Caine will attend a series of engagements while in Glasgow, representing the Isle of Man Government and supporting Manx competitors across athletics, bowls, track cycling, gymnastics, Para powerlifting and swimming.
Her programme includes a reception at Team Wales House hosted by Welsh First Minister Rhun ap Iorwerth.
She said the Games were “about more than competition”, adding that they help the Isle of Man “strengthen international relationships, raise awareness of our Island and demonstrate our wider contribution to the Commonwealth family”.
The Games run until August 2.
