The Chief Minister has said that more government can do more for the island’s food security.
Alf Cannan MHK says he was “pretty shocked” at the news that on the Isle of Man only 6% of the food bought on the island is produced here.
The Chief Minister suggested that the government could require supermarkets to ensure a certain percentage of their products are Manx.
Food Security
Speaking on Manx Radio’s Perspective, the Chief Minister said: “I think it time has come for a much greater look at this area.
“I think from a mainstream government perspective, you’re often talking about housing, the education, the economy, cost of living, what we’re doing for for our our local economy, in terms of our food supply, our our agricultural economy, how we can actually grow that.
“I think the time has come to be a bit braver and possibly a bit bolder and take a much more sort of home grown view about supporting agriculture and getting goods, Manx goods into the supermarkets, but not just on a if we can basis, but actually we must do it because we need that food security for the future.”
