The Mountain Road will shut for four weeks between the Bungalow and Creg Ny Baa at the end of the month.
The road will be closed to allow the Department of Infrastructure to resurface and re-profile the stretch of road.
Work is programmed to start on March 31 and it’s anticipated to reopen on April 26.
However, a contingency is in place to extend the closure until May 2.
This work will require a 24/7 road closure between the Bungalow and Creg Ny Baa, which includes the Easter period.
Month Long Closure
The Department of Infrastructure is to undertake road safety improvement works on the Mountain Road between the 33rd Milestone and Kate’s Cottage.
This is part of the DoI’s ongoing asset management and network improvement regime.
The DoI carries out road safety and road condition surveys to gather evidence that informs investment decision making and programming.
Following a review and analysis of various data sets including road collision data, the decision has been made to resurface and re-profile this stretch of road.
Road Damage
In addition to surfacing works, it is intended to excavate the road surface to replace collapsed stone culverts below the carriageway between Keppel Gate and Kate’s Cottage.
The DoI says these culverts currently do not operate at capacity, which contributes to surface water on the road at Kate’s Cottage and which increases the risk of ice causing hazardous winter driving conditions.
Nuisance to Northerners For a Month
The DoI says that whilst the closure is in place possible work on alternative routes between Douglas and the North will be programmed for other times.
In April of each year, there is a series of closures over the length of the Mountain Road to allow cyclical road maintenance and TT preparation to be carried out.
This work will be done whilst the resurfacing work is underway.
Ramsey to Bungalow
The northern end of the road from Ramsey to the Bungalow will also close to all traffic from April 14 to April 17 but then reopen for the Easter Bank Holiday.
There is provision to re-close from April 22 until April 25 if necessary.
The closures will be on a 24hr a day basis.
Accessible Areas During The Month
The Snaefell Mountain Railway will operate as normal and the Snaefell Summit Café and Victory Café will be accessible from Sulby via the Tholt Y Will Road at all times.
The Creg Ny Baa Hotel will be accessible from Douglas via Hillberry and Laxey via the Creg Ny Baa Back Road at all times.
