New Species of Ant Found on Island

Manx Wildlife Trust says a new species of ant with no previous record on the island has been recorded.

The species was found in an Area of Special Scientific Interest in the south of the island by Sue Harvey.

The ant, Lasius platythorax, was found at Rosehill Quarry.

MWT said: “Rosehill ASSI (Area of Special Scientific Interest) is part of MWT Billown Nature Reserve since 2023 and we have been helping restore and extend this site for over 10 years.

“It is a disused limestone quarry, and home to many of the Island’s rarest plant and insect species. Its species-rich character comes from the shallow alkaline soils, bare rock, and south-facing sun-trap – the perfect home for an ant!”
