A replacement facility for Cummal Mooar may take two to three years, subject to agreement on the service delivery model, funding and construction milestones.
Replacing the Cummal Mooar residential care facility in Ramsey was the focus of a meeting held earlier this month.
The meeting was aimed at establishing what services a new facility should provide.
Cummal Mooar
A new care home for the north was planned and then on hold, with it once looking like the Ramsey home, which opened in 1981, would close before a new home opened.
However, after significant backlash those plans were scrapped, albeit with little by way of a timeframe.
While Cummal Mooar has supported the community well for more than 40 years, a replacement is required in order to continue providing a modern, fit-for-purpose service.
Updating the service specification and establishing demand is a key step toward reaching an agreed delivery model and the DHSC intends to bring forward a request for capital funding next spring.
What’s Next
The meeting on November 4 was arranged by the DHSC and included representatives from Manx Care and Ramsey Town Commissioners.
Feedback gained will help inform the DHSC’s Capital Steering Group, which was recently established to ensure a coordinated and focused approach alongside Manx Care and the Department of Infrastructure.
Work was ongoing throughout September and October and has continued during November to help drive the project forward through further stakeholder engagement.
Health and Social Care Minister Claire Christian MHK said: “We are determined to ensure that the people of the north of the island have access to high-quality residential care that meets modern standards and reflects the needs of our community.
“This engagement marks an important step in shaping a facility that is not only fit for purpose but also future-proofed to support generations to come.”
Timelines
Timelines under discussion indicate that bringing a new facility into operation may take two to three years, subject to agreement on the service delivery model, funding and construction milestones.
The current Cummal Mooar facility is expected to remain operational until a replacement is commissioned and ready for service, with investment planned to ensure the comfort and safety of residents and staff.
