No Plans for Loneliness Strategy

The DHSC has no current plans to introduce a dedicated loneliness strategy for the island.

Minister Claire Christian confirmed the stance in response to a written question from Onchan MHK Rob Callister.

Ms Christian acknowledged the “profound impact” of loneliness on physical and mental health but said the DHSC will instead address the issue through “ongoing cross-government and cross-agency collaboration”.

“Tackling loneliness requires a collective effort,” Ms Christian said, adding her department “would welcome the opportunity to work closely with colleagues across departments, local authorities, and the third sector to support initiatives that foster connection, inclusion, and wellbeing”.

The DHSC has also highlighted a forthcoming Public Health update on loneliness in older adults, due late 2025 or early 2026, which has identified “several opportunities for action”.

It also pointed to an existing social prescribing pilot in the north, run by the local Health and Care Community, which offers opportunities for older residents to reduce loneliness and social isolation.
