There is no threat to bus strikes over the Christmas period, the DoI Minister has confirmed.
Infrastructure Minister Dr Michelle Haywood told members that, following a conciliation meeting, bus services face no immediate disruption.
This comes after drivers, who are members of the Unite Union, voted for industrial action over premium rates and updated terms and conditions.
Despite no agreement being reached in negotiations ongoing since late 2024, the union has agreed to pause any formal action while talks continue. Dr Haywood told the House of Keys: “Following that mediation meeting, no there is no threat to bus services in the immediate future.”
She added that contingency plans are prepared to maintain essential services, including health, school, and peak commuter routes, should any action be notified in future.
When asked by Rob Callister for reassurance, the Minister said: “Well, given that the bus drivers had balloted about industrial action, there is a threat in the background. However, it is not an immediate threat.”
The Department confirmed most drivers are Unite members and that it aims to harmonise legacy contracts into a single set of terms and conditions.
