No sub-post office service contracts have been terminated or renegotiated so far this financial year, according to the Chair of the Isle of Man Post Office.
The confirmation was given in response to a written question from Juan Watterson MHK.
He asked which sub-post office contracts had been terminated or renegotiated, the impact of any changes, and when they would take effect.
Post Office Contracts
Chair of the Isle of Man Post Office, Stu Peters MHK said that while individual contracts with retail hosts acting as sub-postmasters are commercially confidential, he could confirm that no changes have been made to existing agreements with current retailers providing services on behalf of Isle of Man Post Office and its agency partners.
However, he highlighted that the Post Office is facing significant changes due to a reduction in agency transactions as more government services move online.
This includes the withdrawal of the MiCard by Treasury’s Social Security Division, which has been replaced by a payment exception service, and the Department of Infrastructure’s ongoing digitisation of driving and vehicle licensing services.
Working With Retailers
Mr Peters said Isle of Man Post Office is working closely with retailers to adapt to the government’s changing requirements, ensuring continuity of service and access to essential services.
He noted, however, that these developments are fundamentally altering the viability of the traditional operating model for both the Post Office and its retail partners.
The Isle of Man Post Office Board remains committed to maintaining accessible postal services within communities and to supporting agency partners and customers as demand for in-person transactions declines.
Over time, the Post Office plans to transition to postal-only services under new retail contracts.
Mr Peters confirmed that all current retailers are aware of this intention, although retailers may choose to give notice or not extend their contracts at their own discretion.
He added that the Post Office will continue to manage the transition carefully and in a financially responsible manner, working collaboratively with retailers and government throughout the process.
