The Department of Infrastructure is reviewing the requirement for paper vehicle tax discs as part of a drive to digitise services and create efficiencies.
However, Infrastructure Minister Dr Michelle Haywood confirmed that “there is no established timeframe” for their removal.
The minister revealed the ongoing cost is “about £10,000 a month producing paper tax discs”.
While acknowledging potential savings, she explained that a “considerable background project” involving data handling, database setup, and amending legislative provisions is needed first.
On the impact on the Isle of Man Post Office, Dr Haywood noted that “very few tax discs now are issued via the post office,” but acknowledged it was a factor in the Post Office’s changing business model.
She also ruled out the discs being axed before next year’s election.
