The Minister for Health and Social Care addressed the House of Keys this morning regarding money saving measures within Manx Care.
This included a slowdown in elective surgeries, with non-urgent procedures in Liverpool and Manchester paused until March 31, 2025.
Ann Corlett, Douglas Central MHK was one of the MHK’s that raised concerns about the pause in non-urgent procedures.
The Douglas Central MHK said: “It’s not a saving, it’s simply pushing costs over to the next financial year.”
Not Saving
Corlett queried whether the “cost of canceling and rescheduling appointments make economic sense as all that’s actually being achieved is a delay in spending of approximately eight weeks”.
The Health Minister Claire Christian told the House that there are 60 non urgent surgical procedures which will be rescheduled as soon as possible after March 31.
She added: “There are also around 600 patients that have been affected by these changes over the next two months, but 450 which is 75% of these outpatients attending a follow up appointment with no specific clinical benefit.
“So the that so that those 450 have been validated by the clinicians, whether they are needed for clinical benefit, the remaining 25% of those will be wait will be rescheduled for as soon as possible, after the 31st of March.”
