To raise recognition during Deaf Awareness Week, the Manx Deaf Society will be offering sessions covering basic British Sign Language, Lipreading and Deaf Awareness on Saturday, May 11.
There are three sessions taking place, each has twelve places available. The sessions will be at:
- 11am -12pm
- 12:30pm – 1:30pm
- 2-3pm
The cost per session is £10; Demand is expected to be high so it is essential that anyone interested in attending reserves a place.
Deaf Awareness week runs from May 6 to May 12, and was created to increase the visibility of challenges the deaf community face and educate others on how they can support them.
Manx Deaf Society
The Manx Deaf Society has been providing support and services to the Deaf community on the Isle of Man since the 1920s.
They have been working to ensure that people with hearing loss have access to the resources and support they need to thrive.
This year, they are excited to offer Deaf Awareness Week sessions to anyone who is interested in learning more about Deaf culture, communication and inclusion.
Improving communication is important for members of the public, businesses, and organisations.
Effective communication is essential to success in any setting and learning basic BSL and Lipreading skills can help people to communicate more effectively with members of the deaf community.
Deaf Awareness Week
“We are delighted to offer these sessions to the Manx community as part of Deaf Awareness Week,” said Lucy Buxton, CEO of The Manx Deaf Society.
“We believe that everyone should have access to the tools and resources they need to communicate effectively, regardless of their hearing ability.
“The Deaf community often faces significant barriers to communication, which can lead to social isolation, limited employment opportunities, and reduced access to essential services.
“Effective communication is essential in today’s world, and we hope that these sessions will encourage more people to get involved and support the Deaf community.”
