Last night Peel Commissioners met for the first time since the ruling by planning committee to refuse the plans for Marine Parade.
The board agreed unanimously it would be appealing the decision.
The local authority submitted a planning application in November last year which, in principle, would’ve featured a new café, crown green bowling club house and public toilets.
Marine Parade is zoned for tourism use in the Peel Local Plan.
These would’ve been moved to the current site of the tennis courts, but the committee ruled against, three votes for and two against, with Chair Rob Callister refusing on the casting vote.
It was also confirmed at the meeting that Oie Voaldyn isn’t going ahead this year due to financial constraints.
Last month the commissioners agreed to give the organisers £6000, which the clerk confirmed is in line with the amount given to the carnival.
However, the local authority says the organisers crowdfunded and sought sponsorship of the event to make up the shortfall.
An email sent to the local authority, attached as part of the minutes, says a sponsorship package was obtained and would’ve been a ‘welcome attraction’ to the town.
It also says the commissioners didn’t support the sponsorship offer which was put forward and this is one of the reasons to the event not going ahead.
However the local authority says it has ‘always’ supported the event.
The other planning application which was discussed was Dandara’s proposal for 92 houses off Ballatessan Meadow.
The commissioners agreed to ask planning for a deferment to give them time to speak to developers about their concerns with the plan.
Board members said their ‘particular’ concerns were planning gain and ‘insufficient infrastructure’ to support the development as well as the lack of public transport routes.
