Over £340k in Benefit Overpayments Written Off

The government has written off £340,804.92 in benefit overpayments across the last three financial years.

The totals, released in a written Tynwald answer to Douglas North MHK John Wannenburgh, reveal a sharp fall in 2025/26, when £63,287.23 was written off, compared with £139,006.13 in 2023/24 and £138,511.56 in 2024/25.

Treasury Minister Chris Thomas said the drop was not driven by fewer cases, but by the average value of each write‑off being “considerably smaller” last year.

The three year breakdown is as follows:

  • 2025/26: £63,287.23
  • 2023/24: £139,006.13
  • 2024/25: £138,511.56
