The Manx Labour Party has expressed its pride at its former president being added to the Manx Patriots Roll of Honour.
Speaker Juan Watterson in Tynwald said: “Annie Bridson was a pioneering political figure: the first woman to preside over the Manx Labour Party and the second woman elected to the House of Keys.
“A teacher, unionist, wartime Wren, and social reformer, Mrs Bridson championed education, family planning, and social justice. Her forthright advocacy for women and the underprivileged left a lasting imprint on Manx society and governance.”
The party said: “The Manx Labour MHKs were proud to be listening to these words in Tynwald this week, as Annie Bridson was added to the Manx Patriots Roll of Honour (alongside Sophia Morrison – another very amazing woman).
“Annie was elected as Garff MHK in 1951, as only the second ever female MHK (the first being Marion Shimmin, another MLP member).
“We’re so proud of our party’s long history of trailblazing women who weren’t afraid to speak up, stand tall, and push for a fairer society. These women helped shape the Island we know today, and we’re honoured to have played a part in recognising Annie’s legacy.”
