Orkney-bound Dawn Atherton signed off her Island Games preparations in style with a superb performance at the Great North 10km road race.
Yesterday’s race in Newcastle incorporated a Masters match between England and Wales, with Dawn earning her third England Masters vest in the W40 category within the past year.
She was 25th overall in the women’s race and fifth in the 40 category.
On a testing, hilly course—though not as challenging as the route she’ll face in the Island Games Half Marathon—Dawn clocked a new personal best of 39:12.
Impressively, she ran a negative split in the second half of the race, despite climbing into a headwind for much of it.
Dawn now heads to Orkney clearly hitting top form ahead of her Games debut, when she will race the Half Marathon a week on Friday.
