A painting of the Peggy has gone on display in Castletown Town Hall.
The Peggy of Castletown by Joe Beetham was purchased by the town for £55 after it surfaced at an auction in Plymouth.
Once owned by George Quayle, MNH describes Peggy as “the last intact surviving shallop and the oldest surviving schooner in the world”.
The Town Commissioners said: “We’re delighted to announce that Peggy of Castletown, a stunning maritime painting by Joe Beetham, is now on display in the Town Hall foyer.
“The painting reflects Beetham’s penchant for maritime heritage subjects; it was originally sold by the artist in 1997 for £690 with the artist’s notes about “Captain Quayle’s Schooner Peggy of Castletown” – referring to the boat’s 18th-century origins and innovative drop keel.”
Return?
The return of the boat to Castletown still has no real end date, with MNH planning a £6m renovation of the Nautical Museum including a space for the boat.
However, that is reliant on funding and there has been few updates since those plans were unveiled.
