A petition will be presented to Tynwald calling for a public referendum before any major energy infrastructure projects can be developed in Manx territories.
The petition, submitted by Georgina O’Sullivan and presented by Onchan MHK Julie Edge, expresses concern over potential projects “designed principally for the export of energy or the economic benefit of nations other than the Isle of Man”.
It argues that such developments carry “significant long-term implications for the environment, economy, and heritage of the Isle of Man” and therefore require “explicit consent and democratic support of the Manx population.”
The petition requests three actions: legislation requiring full public disclosure and parliamentary debate prior to international agreements, measures ensuring no final treaty or consent is executed without a direct public vote and the establishment of a Select Committee to investigate frameworks for public consent.
