Phoebe’s Boston Marathon

Phoebe Coates completed her second Marathon earlier this week when she clocked an excellent time of 3:01:09 in Boston.

It was about three minutes down on her debut time set in Belfast a year ago, but it was still an excellent performance on a very warm day and was more valuable experience gained.

Phoebe, who comes from Laxey and was a member of Northern AC for many years, has been a medical student at Queen’s University Belfast in recent years.

From track to marathon

Originally a middle distance track runner who was also good at cross-country, Phoebe got back into running when helping a friend in Belfast to train for a Marathon a couple of years ago, and quickly found long distance running to her liking.

Like Christa Cain, Phoebe found the hills on the Boston route quite hard to judge.

She said “It was so tough in the heat, but I still really enjoyed it. I think I should have maybe gone a bit faster at the start to make up for the time lost on the hills, because even though I felt strong up them I lost so much time during them!

“But it was still an amazing experience, and I was also lucky enough to get a bit of time in Boston which was so lovely. Back to uni for me now though!”

I’m sure this is just the start for Phoebe in her new-found athletics discipline!
