Douglas Council’s application to redesign some of the gardens on Douglas promenades has been published.
The application (25/90144/B) covers gardens four and five and the Queens Gardens.
A total of £1.47 million has been budgeted for the whole scheme which includes a play area designed around a pirate ship.
Marine Garden four is the larger of the two Marine Gardens being developed and was the garden which faced the majority of the impact from Storm Barra in 2021, with almost all of its wall collapsing and the destruction of the play equipment.
You can read the full plans here.
Free time
The council’s application says: “The garden used to be used as boating pool, but more recently it is remembered as a play area and as a destination to bring your children after a long day out walking around town / sightseeing.
“Its close connections to shops, cafés, car parking and transport links fulfilled the need for a child friendly space to allow some focused free time away from the busy town centre.”

Skating
Garden five will be massively renovated to offer an urban sports and play area.
The plans say: “This garden is designed to withstand use by scooters, skateboarders and roller skaters – the curvilinear forms are ideal for this and the detail design will be robust and able to withstand wheeled sport activity.
“The sunken nature of this garden means that spectators can gather around the outside edges and look in on activity.”

Queens
The Queen’s Garden is at the north end of the promenade and consists of several patches of grass, planting for flowers, toilets and a shelter used by the Blue Tits for their sea swimming.
In the application it proposed t keep the majority of the existing paths through the gardens, connecting the already established routes along the promenade and the existing layouts.
Seating and furniture have been proposed along the length of the garden including a raised seating platform has been proposed at the southern gathering area.
