Police on the Isle of Man are encouraging people to do as much as they can to prevent their homes from being broken into.
The Island’s police force said they deal with an increase in burglaries over the autumn and winter months when it gets dark early and our homes are filled with gifts following Christmas.
Burglars are often opportunists who will target an open window, an unlocked door or valuables on display if they think they can get away with it. Some burglars may break in to your property looking for the keys to your vehicle.
Measures to mitigate against burglary risks
• Close and lock your doors and windows when you go out, even if you are just in the garden
• Hide all keys, including car keys, out of sight and away from the letterbox (remember a device could be used to hook keys through the letterbox)
• Fit an intruder alarm in a visible place and test it frequently
• Install security lights
• Leave a radio or light on timer and draw the curtains when you go out at night to make your property look occupied
• Keep ladders and tools stored away; don’t leave them outside where they could be used to break into your home
• Store any high value items (i.e. jewellery, passports) in a secure place or safe
• Keep an eye on your neighbour’s property and encourage them to do the same for you. Report anything suspicious
• Consider joining or forming a Neighbourhood Watch
Other recommendations for individual items, something particularly important after Christmas, included keeping the receipts and serial numbers of gifts safe, and photographing and insuring unique or expensive items.
Vehicle Safety
Officers are also encouraging vehicle owners on the Island to clear any items of value from view and utilise secure car park facilities.
Drivers should also store car keys away from doors and windows.
