Ballaquinney Farm has made its final delivery of spuds to Port Erin chippy.
Maurice and Kevin Coole decided to call it a day after 50 years of growing spuds at the Ballabeg farm citing “continued rise in energy, fertiliser and seed costs, amidst a sharp slump in local sales”.
They said they had been delivering spuds to Port Erin chippy for “approximately 20 years” and joked they would “hate to think how many bags we have delivered there in that time”.

“After 50 years growing potatoes and being one of the the last relatively big growers in the South, it’s going to be a big adjustment not growing potatoes but we take comfort in the fact we have produced a good product over the years and fed many people in that time,” they added.
The final potatoes are due to be shipped off-island.
