Private Patients Unit to Reopen

DHSC Minister Claire Christian has announced a timetable for the reopening of the Private Patients’ Unit (PPU) at Noble’s Hospital.

Initial services are planned for the first quarter of the 2026/27 financial year.

Since its refurbishment in early 2020, the unit has been used for NHS services, including as a vaccination hub and to house the relocated Martin Ward.

Despite this, revenue from private services is forecast to rise significantly.

Procedures

Ms Christian said: “Manx Care is now progressing work to reopen the Private Patients’ Unit with a view to re-establishing private day case and inpatient services, initially focusing on specific procedures such as cataracts.”

The move supports a mandate objective requiring Manx Care, by 30 April 2026, to “provide assurance of the governance arrangements required to commence services and then aim to deliver 100-day case procedures by March 2027.”

To achieve this, Manx Care has commissioned the Housden Group to develop a five-year Private Patients Strategy and establish necessary clinical, corporate, and commercial frameworks by April 2026.

“The Private Patients Strategy document will be shared publicly once formal sign-off has been progressed through the Manx Care Board and the DHSC Department Meeting,” the Minister confirmed.
