Manx boxer Matty Rennie is raring to go as he looks to extend his unbeaten pro-career in Liverpool this weekend.
Rennie will face Ukrainian Mykhailo Sovtus at the Grand Central Hall on Saturday, with fellow Manxman Jamie Devine also on the card.
The 25-year-old, is taking nothing for granted as he goes in as the favourite this weekend, but is looking ahead, saying he is “at a time in my career where I need to be fighting for titles”.
Wanting to take on bigger fights, Rennie said he “likes being the underdog” and wants a chance to put on a show.
He said: “I feel like I’m already. I probably should have had a title by now, but it just hasn’t happened to unfold like that. But that’s boxing, it’s unpredictable and we don’t know what is going to come next.”
After four years with coach Dave Jennings, Rennie has linked up with new coach Terry Spencer and will fight out of the TS Gym in Widnes.
He said: he said: “Dave is one of the best trainers around, but I wanted to try something new.
“This for me is a gel fight for me and Terry, we just both felt like we needed that eight to 10 weeks to gel together and after that we want to be hunting down titles.”
Scott Davies, of Davies Construction, who is one of Rennie’s sponsors told Manx.News he will be in Liverpool for the bout.
He said: “It’s nice to watch Matty on his professional journey, he’s a fantastic boxer and a great guy, I can’t wait to see him fight for a title soon.”
