Road maintenance spending over the past seven financial years has been set out in Tynwald, following a written question from Dr Michelle Haywood MHK.
Infrastructure Minister Tim Crookall confirmed that only four discrete capital schemes were undertaken during the period, all classed as renewals rather than routine maintenance.
These included works on East Quay, Douglas Promenade and Pulrose Bridge.
Discrete capital schemes expenditure:
- 2019/20: £8,754,440
- 2020/21: £9,976,861
- 2021/22: £4,220,001
- 2022/23: £2,021,268
- 2023/24: £1,272,138
The Minister noted that wider strategic road maintenance is funded through a rolling capital programme rather than individual schemes.
Revenue spending on highway maintenance:
The Department also released its annual revenue expenditure for routine highway maintenance:
- 2019/20: £6,053,718
- 2020/21: £5,528,496
- 2021/22: £5,558,354
- 2022/23: £6,105,947.92
- 2023/24: £6,671,458
- 2024/25: £6,931,896.92
- 2025/26: £7,124,785
The figures show a steady rise in revenue spending over the period, with the current year reaching just over £7.1 million.
