The Chief Minister has said the removal of two ministers was necessary in the national interest after growing disagreement over policy direction and delivery.
Earlier today, Dr Michelle Haywood MHK was sacked as Minister for Infrastructure and Dr Alex Allinson MHK as Treasury Minister.
They have been replaced by Tim Crookall MHK and Chris Thomas MHK.
Divergence of Opinion
Speaking to Manx.News, Alfred Cannan MHK said that while both outgoing ministers had worked hard and achieved progress in their roles, there had been a “divergence of opinion” in recent months over both policy and how it was being rolled out.
“When you are fundamentally against the policy and very concerned about the way it is implemented, there comes a point when action has to be taken,” he said.
Responding to criticism that the changes came too late, the Chief Minister said leading a cabinet of largely independent MHKs required balancing consensus and capability.
He rejected claims the reshuffle was destabilising, describing it instead as a move intended to reflect public concern and restore confidence in government.
Resolve Key Areas
Mr Cannan said the appointments of Mr Crookall and Mr Thomas reflected the majority view in the House of Keys and would help resolve key areas of dispute.
He said both ministers had consistently raised concerns about existing policies and were better aligned with the direction now required.
The Chief Minister confirmed an immediate refocus on three issues: minimum wage increases, the rollout of 20mph zones, and strained relations with local authorities.
He said the pace of minimum wage increases would be slowed and paired with a substantial rise in personal income tax allowances, with proposals to be outlined in Tynwald and developed further in the February Budget.
The rollout of 20mph zones has been paused, with support remaining for limits around schools and healthcare settings, but a review planned of the wider, blanket approach.
Mr Cannan also said efforts would be made to rebuild relationships with local authorities following opposition to the Local Government Amendment Bill, with an emphasis on restoring trust and avoiding the imposition of additional costs on ratepayers.
He said the decision to act now was driven by a need to restore cohesion and reduce growing hostility towards government policy.
“We cannot keep fighting on multiple fronts,” he said. “We need to reset and focus on delivering sensible measures that have broad support and deliver better outcomes for society.”
