Poets across the Isle of Man are being invited to apply to become the 12th Manx Bard, with entries now open for the year long role.
The Manx Bard represents the island at events, writes poetry for special occasions and leads creative initiatives that promote poetry and Manx culture.
The position is open to island residents aged 18 and over.
Founder Bridge Carter said the Bard holds “a high profile in the community” and is regularly called upon to perform and create work for important moments. The role also gives each Bard the chance to develop their own projects during their year in post.
Current Manx Bard Bradley Chambers described the opportunity as “a blank canvas”, encouraging entrants to consider what stories they want to tell. “You are the island’s principal poet,” he said. “Always be true. Always be authentic. Always have fun.”
Applicants must submit an entry form, up to three original poems and a 500‑word proposal outlining what they would deliver during their year as Bard. Full rules and forms are available via the Manx Bard Facebook page or by emailing manxbard@gmail.com.
Entries close Friday, August 7, with shortlisted poets invited to audition on Saturday, August 29. The new Manx Bard will be inaugurated on Sunday, August 30.
