The Police have issued a fresh appeal for drivers to obey mandatory 20mph limits in school zones.
Officers say they are “already receiving reports of drivers speeding and not obeying the 20mph speed limits in and around school zones”.
The enforced limits are operational during specific hours, typically from 8:20am to 9:15am and 3:10pm to 4:00pm, with illuminated signage indicating when the restriction is active.
“When the school zone signs are illuminated, the 20mph limit is mandatory and enforceable,” a police post said.
Safety
The force emphasised that the limits are solely for child safety.
“Even a small increase in speed can make a huge difference to your stopping distance and driving too fast gives you less time to react to the unexpected, which could be a child running in the road.”
Drivers are also reminded of their legal duty to stop for School Crossing Patrol officers.
The Police said: “Please stop when they display their STOP signs and follow their instructions.
“Please do not put a child in danger by rushing to get yours to school or speeding through a school zone to get yourself to work.”
