The NSC’s raceway was renamed in honour of Manx cycling royalty this morning as schoolchildren gathered to celebrate the launch of the Sir Mark Cavendish Raceway.
Having started at the NSC under the tutelage of Dot Tilbury, Sir Cav went on to conquer the world winning an Olympic silver medal, a world road racing championship and a record breaking 35 stages of the Tour de France.
Sir Cav, who first discovered his love for cycling at the Douglas circuit, said: “Inspiring young people — and my own children — to follow their passions is my motivation. This project is very dear to my heart.
“When I first came here as a boy, I found a place where I could ride, race, make friends, and fall in love with cycling. I’ve never forgotten that.”
Lap
During the event, Sir Mark completed a lap of the 1km circuit before joining hundreds of children for a celebratory ride-out.
He unveiled a new podium, custom finish line, and permanent signage and a woven quote reading: “I dreamed of being like my heroes.”
A large artwork featuring the names of pupils from every Isle of Man school was also revealed.
“I love this place,” he added. “We’re so lucky with what we have in the Isle of Man — the NSC, the facilities, the support. I wouldn’t be where I am without it.”
The Greatest
Chief Minister Alf Cannan said: “The Sir Mark Cavendish Raceway honours the legacy of a Manx boy who found a passion right here — and pushed himself to become the greatest of all time.
“His story will go on inspiring a whole new generation.”
The project involved thousands of young people nominating heroes, creating banners, and interviewing Sir Mark, celebrating both his achievements and the belief that big dreams can start in small places.
