The Steam Packet estimates that it carried more passengers but fewer bikers to the island during this year’s TT.
Treasury Minister Dr Alex Allinson revealed some early figures in Keys on Tuesday after the company said it had seen more passengers than last year.
Provisional data showed 39,469 passengers travelled to the Isle of Man, up from 37,808 in 2024.
However, motorbike numbers dipped slightly, which Dr Allinson said was “due to the level of passenger demand and not in relation to capacity.”
Capacity
The Manxman operated near full capacity on several sailings, with eight trips carrying over 800 passengers and two exceeding 900.
Jason Moorhouse (Arbory, Castletown, and Malew) raised concerns over pricing, asking if fares were deterring visitors. Dr Allinson responded that increases had matched inflation, with peak-period pricing under review.
Julie Edge (Onchan) sought clarity on passenger counting methods, confirming individual bookings had replaced car-based estimates.
Rob Callister (Onchan) called for booking system improvements after reports of queues at the sea terminal.
Dr Allinson highlighted recent website upgrades and extended 18-month scheduling as improvements that have been made.
Norway?
Noting a chartered sailing from Norway that arrived in Douglas during TT, Mr Thomas questioned whether the Ben-my-Chree could carry out some international trips ahead of future TT’s.
Chris Thomas (Douglas Central) questioned whether unmet demand existed, suggesting potential routes to Norway or Dublin. Dr Allinson confirmed spare capacity on some sailings but noted the Ben-my-Chree had been prioritised for freight, making four extra trips compared to 2024.
Mr Thomas said: “Perhaps there’s demand for a special sailing of the Ben crewed up to Norway.”
Dr Allinson responded: “I’ll certainly bring that up with the board when I meet with them next.”
The Treasury Minister noted that the Steam Packet has left the door open to future route expansions.
