The footballer whose serious injury caused a top-of-the-table Premier League match between Peel and Ayre United to be abandoned was Harry Weatherill.
Harry has enjoyed a lot of success running on the fells in recent years, combining fell running with being a member of Ayre’s excellent football team who have enjoyed a brilliant recent few years including winning the IOM Premier League title a couple of seasons ago.
Harry and his Peel opponent went in together with a full-blooded challenge for the ball, with Harry coming off worst and sustaining what is described as a nasty double leg fracture.
Harry already on the ‘rod’ to recovery
I was delighted to receive a message from Harry Weatherill, following his serious double leg break playing football.
He has had surgery which went well and he is already targeting a return to the fells later this year – that’s a positive attitude for you!
Harry doesn’t use Facebook, but has been shown all the messages of support for him which have been posted in recent days. His message reads as follows:
“Hi Dave, thank you for the post on Facebook and the well wishes. I will hopefully see you up on the fells before the season ends! I will aim to run Axnfell which is September so maybe see you around the course there.
“I had surgery, so I now have a metal rod through my shin and some screws to join the bones back together. They have said my leg will be even stronger than before and have told me I can put my full weight down on it already, so I’m trying but it’s just too painful at the moment. My head just won’t let me, but I will get there! I’m just keeping it moving as much as I can bear and doing leg extensions etc.
“I don’t have Facebook so I can’t respond to the well-wishers but I am very grateful for their support!! All the best, Harry.”
