Michael Crellin, a stalwart of the Douglas Bay Horse Tramway for over 50 years, has sadly passed away.
Douglas Bay Horse Tramway has said it is “immensely saddened” by the news of Michaels passing.
The tramway had passed its deepest condolences to his family and close friends, along with this statement:
“Michael joined the horse tramway back in 1973 as a blacksmith apprentice to the late Tommy Joughin. He worked his way up to become Stables Foreman in the 1980s, managing the 60 or so horses at the time and doing much of the required farrier work with his acquired skills.
He was appointed Tramway Superintendent in 1992, continuing to look after the horses, but also driving trams on the Promenades when demand arose.
He was an advocate for and continued the long tradition of the tram horses participating in vintage ploughing competitions on the Island.
Since 2018, he has been the tramway’s Farm Manager for the Clypse and Honey Hill grazing fields above Onchan.
Michael was Chairman of the IOM Heavy Horse Society for many years. He attended the annual Royal Manx and Southern District agricultural shows for as long as anyone can remember, showing and competing with both the tram horses and his own draught horses, winning many prizes for heavy horse in hand, in harness and breed classes.
Our deepest condolences to his family and close friends. He was known by so many, much respected and will be sorely missed.”
