Summerland Campaigners Launch Fundraiser

A campaign group seeking a new inquest into the 1973 Summerland fire tragedy has launched a crowdfunding appeal.

The Justice for Summerland group said it has launched the fundraiser after its request was “met with cold refusal, technical obstruction and delaying tactics” by the Attorney General’s office.

The group had its initial application for a fresh inquest turned down earlier this summer and it is now pursuing legal avenues to secure an inquest for the 50 people who lost their lives in the Douglas leisure complex disaster.

In a statement announcing the CrowdJustice page, the group said: “We have been pushed deeper into the costly and complex Manx legal system in our pursuit of justice for the 50 lives lost.”

It added: “We are strong and determined to reach a truthful legacy for the Summerland victims.”

The fundraising initiative aims to cover legal costs for the continuing fight.
