An employment tribunal has ruled a music teacher wasn’t paid less than colleagues due to his gender.
Brass instrument player Garry Reynolds took the DESC to a tribunal claiming breaches of the Equality Act and Employment Act.
Mr Reynolds said that he was a fully qualified teacher, which he was in Scotland, but due to how the island recognises those qualifications, he was not recognised or paid as a fully qualified teacher on the island.
When he discovered that female colleagues were paid more, he believed this was a breach of the equality act.
Chair Douglas Stewart and the panel recognised that Mr Reynolds is an “accomplished musician with a strong pedigree of training and experience behind him”
However, the panel added: “The Tribunal appreciated from Mr Reynolds’ evidence that, given his qualifications, he could not accept that he was not regarded as qualified.
“Unfortunate though that is for him and however well qualified he is, without an appropriate teaching qualification, he had to be categorised as unqualified.”
It threw out all of his claims.
