The Department of Education, Sport and Culture says teachers, lecturers and school and UCM staff will be paid for day schools closed due to snow.
Monday January 5 saw schools closed due to snow and ice, with the minister this week defending the dithering that went on with announcing those closures.
Despite minister Daphne Caine just yesterday being unable to confirm if teachers would be paid, the department now says they will “in line with long-standing practice”.
Following the closure of all state-run schools and UCM last Monday due to snow, some staff sought clarification about pay. This followed a routine all-staff bulletin outlining the public service’s policy on attendance during adverse weather. The policy makes clear that DESC has separate protocols for schools and teaching staff.
In Keys on Tuesday, Mrs Caine said she department was “liaising with HR and all of us would like that to be resolved as soon as possible”
Mrs Caine has now said: “I want to reassure teachers, school staff and UCM staff that they will be paid for any closures due to adverse weather.
“This has always been the department’s position.”
