Teenagers on minimum wage in the Isle of Man will see a 12.67% increase to their wages come April next year.
Currently, those over compulsory school age but under 18 are paid £9.55 per hour.
However, come April 2026 teenagers will see their pay rise to £10.76.
Teenagers Pay
The increase has seen the Chamber of Commerce call for age wage bands, similar to that in the UK.
For example, in the UK the rates for 2025 are approximately:
- £12.50 per hour for those 23 and over;
- £11.30 for those 21-22;
- £9.10 for 18-20;
- £7.20 for those under 18.
Some members of the business sector have raised concerns that the pay increase will see youngsters struggle to get into the workplace.
This was echoed by former Treasury minister Eddie Teare, who said: “You need those low level jobs so young people can get or some young people can get into the workplace. Now, employers tend to look for people who’ve got a bit of experience.
“Now you’ve got to give people the opportunity to start work. So then carry on. And unless we actually have an environment where those entry level jobs are freely available, we’re going to have a problem.”
