A temporary access road is being proposed to minimise disruption during improvement works at Balthane Junction.
The DoI aims to maintain access to the Balthane Industrial Estate while enabling a more efficient construction process for the junction upgrade.
The department said the temporary road will link the Ballasalla Bypass with Ballahick Road and support a one-way traffic system on the A5, “significantly enhancing safety by physically separating construction activities from the travelling public”.
Strategy
The plan was developed due to limitations of traditional traffic control.
The department noted that a signal-controlled system would cause “significant delays,” citing “numerous complaints” and reports of “missed flights due to prolonged delays” during previous works.
The phased construction will see traffic flow northbound only, with southbound traffic diverted via Cross Four Ways to Castletown.
The overall project is expected to be completed within six to eight months.
