What began as news of a major development in the island’s capital has resulted in the Chinese courts.
Earlier today a major BBC investigation was published which found the Isle of Man has been used by scammers conning victims in China out of millions of dollars.
According to Chinese court documents, betweenJanuary 2022 and January 2023 scammers used a method known as “pig-butchering” which goes through the process of “fattening the pig”, gaining the victim’s trust.
The BBC reported: “In late 2021, nearly 100 people had been transferred to the Isle of Man to work for a company which Chinese court documents refer to as “MIC”. They had come from the Philippines where they had worked for another scamming firm. The BBC has discovered that MIC stands for Manx Internet Commerce.
“On the Isle of Man, MIC was part of a group of associated companies – all with the same owner.
“An online casino, run by King Gaming Ltd, was the most prominent. In mainland China, gambling is illegal. Setting up halfway around the world meant the group’s founders could target Chinese customers, but also take advantage of the Isle of Man’s low gambling taxes.”
The Scam
Fake investors built an atmosphere of hype and excitement around the money-making skills with the victim then putting money into a particular investment platform.
Funds were then syphoned off by the scammers, who actually controlled these platforms.
The Chinese court said it was difficult to verify the victims’ total losses – but it said 38.87m renminbi (£4.17m/$5.3m) had been taken from at least 12 victims.
The island’s gambling regulator has stripped MIC’s gambling affiliate companies of their licences and in April, police raided the former bank offices.
In a statement released shortly afterwards, police said the raids had been in connection with a wider fraud and money laundering investigation in relation to King Gaming Ltd IOM.
Campus
Having settled on the island, basing itself first in a hotel and later in a former bank office, the company had big plans, which included a campus on Victoria Road.
The government was also pulled in to the scam, with the Department for Enterprise saying the proposed development, which has now been halted indefinitely was of “prime national importance responding directly to the Economic Strategy”.
It added: “We consider that a scheme of this quality and ambition exemplifies the economic strategy’s ambition to promote a location that is a leading, sustainable island.
‘”his considerable investment will provide a new home for a highly skilled, highly productive workforce, which will deliver on the Economic Strategy’s drive to deliver better paid jobs and rewarding career opportunities. The nature of the inward investment via the recruitment of employees internationally as well as on island, sustains government’s goals for a more diverse economy and a larger, younger, more diverse population by promoting growth in an established sector.”
Those plans are now on hold indefinitely and with gaming licences lost and police investigations still ongoing, the island’s reputation will be the next to fall into question.
