Think Manx Before McMansion

Evening all, let’s talk about tomorrow’s big reopening of the American embassy on Peel Road.

The golden arches will be shining once more over Douglas and a collective cheer will go up from those who crave the gamble of a working milkshake machine.

Now, hold on, I’m not here to bash the Big Mac. I wore that cap for years, I worryingly still think I could hop into the kitchen, don that apron and fire out 1/4 pounders like Spongebob whips up Krabby Patties.

However, while you’re parked up on Peel Road waiting to get into the drive-thru, your local shop is selling Manx meat that actually tasted the sea air and even mooed with a Manx accent.

Fancy it up a tad, instead of a burger, why not grab some lamb, maybe even some queenies?

A few minutes in a pan with some garlic and butter and you’ve got a taste that no Filet-O-Fish could ever comprehend, even on its best day.

McDonald’s is comfortable, familiar, the culinary equivalent of putting on an old, worn-out hoodie and sometimes that’s exactly what you need.

I also get it, it’s easy and not too spenny for families, but you can make something amazing at home by the time you’ve made it round the drive-thru and back home and it doesn’t have to cost a future.

Even if you don’t fancy cooking, go out and support a local business, go the chippy, go the pub, order from any number of the brilliant takeaways we, no-one has ever said no to a Chinese.
