The Education Minister says there are always toilets available to students.
Her response follows a question from Manx Labour Party leader Joney Faragher about why some schools are locking toilets.
Daphne Caine said that facilities are only locked due to “damage, vandalism, occurrences of antisocial activity, cleaning, or where there are safeguarding concerns”.
She added that vandalism is a particular issue in secondary schools, which can lead to facilities being temporarily unavailable.
In response to the specific concern of student access, Mrs Caine confirmed that “schools ensure that alternative toilet facilities are available for students to use”.
Mrs Cane added: “Some secondary schools have systems in place whereby different toilet blocks are available to use throughout different periods of the day to ensure that if any students are absent during lesson time, they can be easily located if necessary.
“Again, it is important to note that schools ensure that alternative toilet facilities are available for students to use when others are locked.”
