The Chief Minister has released new data on employment in key sectors and, in response to Juan Watterson MHK, how many public‑sector staff regulate them.
According to figures taken from the Quarterly Economic Figures (April 1), employment stands at:
- Banking — 1,920
- Insurance — 2,239
- E‑gaming — 580
- Professional services — 1,525
- Health — 8,443
- Agriculture — 503
- Tourism and hospitality — 4,229
- Manufacturing — 1,972
For regulatory staffing, the Chief Minister reported:
- E‑gaming — 49 FTE
- Health — 11 FTE
- Agriculture — 16 FTE
- Tourism & hospitality — 1.5 FTE
- Manufacturing — no dedicated regulator (firms follow general H&S, fire safety and statutory requirements)
For banking, insurance and professional services, Alfred Cannan MHK said the Financial Services Authority does not allocate staff by sector because its work spans the wider financial and professional services industry.
The FSA has 109 staff (115.07 FTE including vacancies) deployed across prudential, AML/CFT, enforcement, policy and operational divisions.
A Notable Contrast
The Chief Minister’s written answer states that tourism and hospitality are regulated by just 1.5 FTE public‑sector staff.
However, the Department for Enterprise’s own organisational chart shows that Visit Isle of Man, the executive agency responsible for tourism, has 31 employees.
While the agency does not act as a statutory regulator, it plays a central role in sector oversight, development and industry support.
