Unclear How Much Customers Paying to Install Fibre

It is not possible to confirm how much customers have paid towards the cost of fibre installation, according to the Enterprise Minister.

Tim Johnston was asked for a figure by Arbory, Castletown and Malew MHK Jason Moorhouse, who also questioned whether the charging structure was fair.

In his response, the Mr Johnston said:: “The department does not hold financial information relating to the operations of licensed telecommunications providers on the island.

“As a result, it is not possible to ascertain the annual level of customer contributions.”

Detailing the regulatory framework, Mr Johnston said: “The Communications and Utilities Regulatory Authority (CURA) is responsible for ensuring that wholesale pricing is reflective of the underlying cost of service provision.”

However, he confirmed that oversight does not extend to what consumers are charged directly, adding: “Retail broadband pricing remains the responsibility of individual service providers.

“CURA does not impose direct regulation on retail pricing.”
