Plans for island‑wide 20mph speed limits appear to be receding as the Department of Infrastructure shifts its focus back to targeted zones around schools.
A new Traffic Regulation Order would replace the broader 20mph approach with a narrower scheme covering residential roads surrounding Ballakermeen High School, Henry Bloom Noble Primary School, St Mary’s Primary School, St Ninian’s School and Scoill yn Jubilee.
Major routes would remain at their existing limits unless reviewed individually.
No Blanket Approach
The DoI says the revised strategy reflects feedback from recent public and stakeholder consultation and aligns more closely with political direction from Tynwald.
It also positions the change as part of Our Island Plan, aiming to deliver safer, greener and more connected communities.
Under the proposal, the 20mph limits would be introduced through signage alone, with no new traffic‑calming measures such as speed humps.
The Isle of Man Constabulary has confirmed its current enforcement model would apply to any newly graded limits.
The DoI says the targeted approach would make walking and cycling to school safer, create more inclusive streets, reduce collision risks and cut noise and air pollution in residential areas.
It also argues the scheme offers a cost‑effective way to improve neighbourhood environments while encouraging more considerate driving.
