Fire crews were called to Marine Drive earlier today after a hot disposable barbecue was placed inside a Beach Buddies wheelie bin, setting it alight.
Members of the public intervened before firefighters arrived, using water from a nearby stream to tackle the flames.
Crews then fully dampened down the bin to ensure the fire was completely extinguished.
A fire service spokesperson said: “We’d like to thank those who helped and called this in.”
Dangers
The incident has prompted a fresh warning about the dangers of disposable barbecues. The service stressed that these items can remain dangerously hot long after use.
Guidance issued to the public includes: “Let them cool fully before moving or disposing of them. Never place hot barbecues in normal bins, only BBQ bins. Keep barbecues away from dry grass, fences and buildings. Have water nearby in case of emergency. Take all rubbish home or use the correct disposal points.”
The fire service added: “A small mistake can quickly become a serious fire. Stay safe and barbecue responsibly.”
