Concerns have been raised in Tynwald over whether Manx National Heritage has sufficient funding to fully open its heritage sites for the 2025 tourist season.
The issue was debated after MHK Tim Glover questioned Enterprise Minister Tim Johnston about site accessibility and financial priorities.
Mr Johnston confirmed that most heritage sites reopened in March and will remain open until October, stating: “As far as they’re concerned, there was access to all these sites.”
However, Mr Glover highlighted restricted opening times at key locations, such as the Old House of Keys (open only on Saturdays) and the Grove Museum (noon to 4 PM, Saturday to Wednesday).
He added: “Does he actually stand by saying that our heritage sites are fully open?”
Budget
Jason Moorhouse MHK pressed for clarity on budget allocation, to which Johnston replied that MNH prioritises wages, maintenance, conservation, and income generation but did not provide a percentage breakdown.
“Other essential obligations include preventative maintenance, reactive maintenance, infrastructure costs, and conservation of objects in their care,” he said.
Lawrie Hooper MHK raised concerns about alignment with the Isle of Man’s visitor strategy, asking how operational decisions by MNH’s board of trustees support broader tourism goals.
Mr Johnston acknowledged the need for coordination but stressed: “They’ll make decisions based on demand and resources.”
Race Fans
Gary Clueit MLC suggested flexible opening during TT and rainy race days, noting: “Many racing fans wander aimlessly looking for something to do.”
Mr Johnston agreed to relay the proposal.
Mr Glover concluded by urging a review of MNH’s finances, citing reliance on trust funds for repairs like the Laxey Wheel.
Mr Johnston admitted funding challenges, stating: “They are always in a very challenging position.”
