Earlier this week, Willaston Primary School received the Manx Wildlife Trust (MWT) Wilder Schools Award.
A member of the MWT came to see how the school has adapted it’s environment to encourage wildlife to thrive.
Beth also spent time with Year 3 making bird feeders and with Reception looking at where to place its hedgehog house.
The school has thanked Mrs Brain and Miss Wade for all their hard work, and a well done to all the children that have helped by weeding, watering plants, making bug houses and planting new plants.
Wilder awards
Has your school thought about entering? Everyone is a winner if you can commit to 5 out of 10 suggested changes to your school grounds to make it more wildlife friendly!
School grounds can be important habitats for wildlife in both rural and urban areas as they can provide a wildlife corridor for many species.
The award scheme allows schools to create vital habitats and even provide useful data by surveying certain species.
To achieve the award, classes or eco clubs are invited to complete at least 5 of the 10 of the suggested activities, which range from making bird feeders to upcycling plant pots.
The scheme also rewards schools who are already working to make their school grounds wildlife friendly as participants can submit photo evidence of the activities they have already completed.
