Dave Mackey has formally entered the race for Douglas East, launching his campaign with a message centred on lived experience, community connection and what he describes as “real, unfiltered” representation for constituents.
In a video posted on his socials, Mackey emphasised that he is not a career politician, instead framing his candidacy around four decades of working life rooted directly in Douglas East. He highlighted his long tenure running the Ascot Hotel on Empire Terrace, a family business since 1979. He sights this as evidence of his experience managing budgets, navigating regulation and supporting local employment.
Mackey said his years in hospitality gave him a deep understanding of the island’s tourism sector and the pressures facing local businesses. He contrasted this with his current work as a taxi driver, which he described as offering daily insight into the concerns of residents.
“If you want to know what is actually happening in Douglas… you don’t look at a government report. You sit in the front seat of a cab,” he said.

He cited cost‑of‑living pressures, road conditions and public service frustrations as recurring themes in conversations with passengers. As a blue badge guide, he said he also sees the island’s potential and the gap between political perception and everyday reality.
Mackey pledged to “bridge that gap” if elected, outlining priorities including accessible representation, support for local business and tourism, and what he called “common sense solutions” for infrastructure, housing and public services. He criticised “costly vanity projects” and said Douglas East needs a representative who understands the day‑to‑day lives of residents.
“I have the business experience to make tough decisions and the local ground‑level connection to make sure those decisions are the right ones for you,” he said.

Mackey said he will publish detailed policy proposals in the coming days. He closed his announcement by stating he is “ready to work” and “ready to listen,” asking voters for their support.
