Last week foresters from the Department of Environment, Food and Agriculture installed 500 of the Island’s first ever 100% plastic free and biodegradable tree shelters.
A a mixture of conifer and broadleaf trees were planted at Ohio Plantation at the same time.
The tree shelters are the first to be trialled on the Island, and were installed in conjunction with Unesco Biosphere Isle of Man partner and local Manxman Will Halsall of BioCycle Innovations Ltd.
Tree shelters
The shelters themselves are made of cashew shell nut liquid, a renewable and natural biomaterial which is a by-product of cashew nuts.
The tree shelters are the only manufactured 100% biodegradable tree shelters that are fit for purpose, and are designed to protect the saplings throughout their vulnerable early growing stages.
Over the last 3 years the Hills, Forests and Glens team have planted 12,530 mixed broadleaf and conifer species at Ohio Plantation.
