Support to be Available in Schools

A range of support measures will be available for students and staff as they return to their schools on Monday after the death of Christopher McBurnie.

The government says it knows the news came as a shock, and that many people are feeling a range of emotions.

The DESC is working closely with schools and partner agencies to ensure students and staff can talk to professionals about how they’re feeling – both now and in the days and weeks ahead.

Supportive

Being in school can offer comfort and a sense of routine, and teachers and support teams are ready to help. All schools have procedures in place to support student wellbeing, and some secondary schools will have additional support measures in place.

The Department is taking things day by day, listening carefully to the needs of school communities. As part of this, some activities are being reviewed to ensure they are appropriate and sensitive to how students, parents and staff may be feeling.

Support is available

If you or your child are finding things hard, please talk to someone.

That might be a teacher, a parent, a friend, or a trained professional. That goes for teachers too. Support is available both within schools and through wider services for anyone affected.

In difficult times, it’s important we continue to look out for one another – to listen with kindness, be patient, and offer support where we can. Whether you are a student, teacher, parent or friend, your care and compassion can make a real difference.

Struggle

Minister Daphne Caine said: “This tragedy has deeply affected all of us, and our thoughts are first and foremost with the families, friends, and school communities involved.

“I want to reassure our students, parents and staff across the Island that they need not struggle alone. We are doing everything we can to make sure support is available and accessible.

“It’s important to know that whatever you are feeling is completely valid. Please reach out, talk, and look after one another. Our schools are here for you, and we will continue to stand with you in the days ahead.

“Please take care of yourselves – and of each other.”
