A fundraising campaign has been set up to help Tom Weeden recover from his injuries and return to the start line for next year’s TT.
The racer was injured in a crash at Glen Helen during qualifying. Weeden, the 2016 Senior ManxGP winner and a TT competitor since 2017, suffered multiple fractures in the incident.
The fundraising page says: “Riding his Supertwin (Aprilia RS660) in Friday’s qualifying session, Tom clipped a wall at Glen Helen. The handlebar bent and the throttle was subsequently jammed wide open, sending both Tom and the bike into an uncontrollable wheelie and straight towards a wall further down the road.”
Spectator footage of the crash shows Weeden striking the barriers feet-first.
How injuries are listed as “A smashed right ankle—an open wound where his bone came through the leather of the boot—breaks to the left tibia and fibular bones, a T12 vertebral break, a metatarsal fracture and at least one broken rib.”
He was airlifted to Nobles Hospital before being transferred to Aintree for surgery. “His right ankle has been reconstructed by one of the UK’s top ankle surgeons,” the page said..
The fundraiser aims to cover specialist rehabilitation, including oxygen therapy, red light therapy, and intensive physiotherapy.
“These treatments are not provided generally on the NHS and they come at significant cost,” the appeal states. “Every penny donated will go directly towards paying for the rehabilitation. Any extra will be used to repair his Aprilia Supertwin.”
Weeden himself said: “Thanks Heidi for setting this up. Any donations would be most appreciated, going toward rehabilitation and repair costs for both myself and the bike.”
